1.0    Background

The YMCA Driving Doctor Project was developed in response to increasing levels of infant and maternal mortality in the Kori Chiefdom. According to the 2006  UNDP Human development Report, the figures on the survival rate of under five’s is 283 per live births. Also, the maternal mortality rate is 316 per 1000 live births. These figures are not only alarming but beyond the minimum international health standards, thus calls for an intervention.

October 08This final evaluation report on the Driving Doctor Medical project was implemented by the YMCA branches of Aberdeen and Taiama in Sierra Leone between June, 2007 – October 2008 supported by the CVJM Stift Quernheim through the CVJM West bund in West Germany. The report encapsulates achievements, Constrains and challenges faced during the period stated above.

The project objectives were very much relevant to Sierra Leone’s national priorities as outlined in the Ministry of Health’s 2008 Strategic Plan on Child Mortality and maternal health Care. These national priority documents calls on the government of Sierra Leone and the international community to take progressive actions to reduce Infant mortality and at the same time, provide support to pregnant women. Certainly, the YMCA-SL through this project, has contributed immensely to these national strategic objectives in the Kori Chiefdom.
